Internet addresses

It is important to type internet addresses into the address bar on the top of the page and not into a search bar. Internet addresses are the actual address of a computer, and they are created as a set of numbers. When you type a URL into an address bar, it goes to a DNS server (domain name system) that translates it into numerical code. Your computer needs to connect to other computers using this code. If you type a URL into a search engine, it won’t connect you. It would be like typing a name or number into a phone book. The name might match, but it won’t connect your call.

It is also important to remember that the way that information is traced to individuals on the internet is through the IP address. People hack into other people’s computers using IP addresses. It is critical to have virus and internet protection software on your computer so strangers can’t use your address to get into your computer and steal information.
